The Brown Study
In this exhibition Chris Smentkowski invites us into his private world, abstracting upon personal experiences in Silesia (a region in southern Poland) during the time of Zaduszki (All Souls Day), and juxtaposing the industrial landscape of Katowice, Poland with that of Granite City, IL. Paintings, sculpture, video, and sound combine to form a nostalgic dreamlike state where time loses its rigid chronological form, giving way to the senses. The exhibition is not just an interpretation and announcement of experiences but also a meditation on the scarring that industrialization has left upon the natural world.
Chris Smentkowski is a curator, artist, and musician working and living in Saint Louis, MO. He is the Director of Arts for Saint Louis Polonia, Inc., and the founding member of Brain Transplant.
